About the meeting
 Third
meeting of the Statistical Conference of the Americas
(Santiago, Chile, 1 - 3 June, 2005)
The Statistical Conference of
the Americas of ECLAC is a subsidiary body of the Economic Commission,
established in accordance with resolution 2000/7 of the United Nations
Economic and Social Council. The mandates set forth in the Statistical
Conference’s terms of reference include the following: to
promote the development and improvement of national statistics;
to promote international, regional and bilateral cooperation among
national offices and international and regional agencies; and to
draw up a biennial programme of regional and international cooperation
activities.
In 2004, the Executive Committee
held two meetings under the chairmanship of Chile (in Santiago in
May and in Dallas in December). The Committee agreed that during
the third meeting, an in-depth examination should be undertaken
of the following substantive issues:
(a) human resources training
and education: towards a strategic vision;
(b) development of national statistical systems and responsibilities
of national statistical offices; and
(c) follow-up to the Millennium development goals: challenges
and opportunities for national statistical systems.
At this meeting of the Statistical
Conference, member States approved the strategic guidelines for
regional statistical development in Latin America and the Caribbean
and a programme of regional statistical work for the period from
July 2005 to June 2007. In addition, member States elected the Executive
Committee of the Conference for the period 2005-2007.
