Latin America and the Caribbean will grow by 3.7% in 2012 amid global uncertainty and volatility

According to a publication presented today by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), lower growth of the world economy and greater uncertainty and volatility in international financial markets will have repercussions for Latin America and the Caribbean, a region which will register a slight drop in growth to 3.7% in 2012, having reached 4.3% in 2011.

Poverty and Indigence Levels Are the Lowest in 20 Years in Latin America

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) reported that between 1990 and 2010 the poverty rate in Latin America dropped by 17 percentage points (from 48,4% to 31,4%) , while the indigence rate fell by 10.3 percentage points (from 22,6% to 12,3%).

In the case of Latin America and the Caribbean as a whole, the growth rate is anticipated to be 5.9%; however, the Caribbean will grow much more slowly. While the prospects for growth in the Caribbean are better in 2010 and 2011 relative to 2009, for a number of countries the recovery will be slow.
