ECLAC Executive Secretary Meets with High-Level Officials in People's Republic of China

(16 October 2012) The Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena, joined by ECLAC's Directors Osvaldo Rosales and Raúl García-Buchaca, met with high-level officials of the People's Republic of China as part of the first visit that the senior United Nations official carried out to the Asian country.

President of Ireland Called for a Harmonization of Investment and Sustainable Development

(5 October 2012) President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, visited the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, where he called for investment and sustainable development to be based on solid principles and to respect the well-being and environmental rights of local communities. As part of his tour of Chile, Brazil and Argentina, the leader took part in the Seminar on "Investment for economic growth, social inclusion and environmental sustainability" , organized by the European Union (EU), the Government of Chile, the EU-LAC Foundation and ECLAC

ECLAC and GIZ signed contract to implement joint programme on sustainable development

(3 October 2012) The Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena, and the Director of the South America Department of the German Agency for International Cooperation (or GIZ, because of its name in German), Sabine Müller, signed the contract to implement the cooperation programme known as "Promoting low-carbon development and social cohesion in Latin America and the Caribbean". The programme was agreed by ECLAC and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) - with GIZ as the implementing agency - on 18 November 2011. It will end on 30 June 2014.
