ECLAC Subregional Headquarters for the Caribbean supports the economic development and integration of the Caribbean, which are vital elements of the ECLAC mission. Our office is focused on understanding the challenges of the Caribbean though research and analysis and offering technical cooperation to governments in order to help them to improve their economic resilience. Among the areas of interest are analyses of how to build domestic capital, both human and institutional, for sustainable development. As a consequence, the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is viewed as a first step in advancing this process. In recognition of the importance of regional and extra-regional cooperation in leveraging the capacity of small States through increasing their bargaining power, and in the internalization of the cost of public goods, our office also focuses on examining the benefits and obstacles to such integration. Our office provides research, analysis and technical assistance for informing policies that advance growth and development in the Caribbean. Particular focus is placed on analysis of: macroeconomic trends and policies; international trade performance and integration into the world economy; and the structural changes and transformations needed to become globally competitive. |
