Sixth Regional Workshop on Information Society Measurement in Latin America and the Caribbean

The meeting will aim to discuss and share experiences in the development of ICT indicators for monitoring the Millennium Development Goals.

(9/7/2010) The Observatory for the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean (OSILAC), in collaboration with the National Institute of Statistics of Uruguay, the Uruguayan Agency for the Development of Electronic Government and Knowledge-based Society (AGESIC) and ECLAC's Statistics and Economic Projections and the Inter-American Development Bank is organizing the Sixth Regional Workshop on Information Society Measurement, that will take place in Montevideo on September 21 to 23, 2010.

This meeting is part of the activities of the Programme of regional and international cooperation of the Statistical Conference of the Americas (SCA) of ECLAC, and also responds to the objectives of the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development.

The Sixth Workshop is the continuation of a series of events that is organized annually OSILAC to address the issue of measuring the information society, in order to respond to the demands to generate regional and international fora for discussion and sharing the progress and developments made in the region, in relation to measuring the information society. These demands were made explicit in goal 66 of the Regional Action Plan eLAC2010, which this year will be reviewed at the Third Ministerial Conference on the Information Society of Latin America and the Caribbean, to be held in Lima, on November 21 to 23, 2010. The meeting will include for the first time a joint plenary meeting with the Focal Points from eLAC2010, which will assist on September 21 to 23, in Montevideo, to the Preparatory Meeting of the Ministerial Conference.

The main purposes of the forthcoming workshop are: (i) to assess the progress and identify synergies and innovative projects in the measurement of ICT; (ii) to discuss regional challenges in the development and implementation of ICT indicators; (iii) to discuss a proposed collaborative work for the improvement of statistical processes to support the design and monitoring of public policies; (iv) to present advanced experiences in the use of ICT indicators for the implementation of digital agendas and/or national observatories; (v) to develop suggestions for the formulation of indicators for the Regional Plan eLAC2015; (vi) to discuss and share experiences in the development of ICT indicators for monitoring the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); and (vii) to plan future activities in order to continue collaborating on monitoring the progresses towards information societies in Latin America and the Caribbean.
