Panorama de la agricultura de América Latina y el Caribe 1990-2000 = Survey of agriculture in Latin America and the Caribbean 1990-2000

This publication is the result of a joint effort by ECLAC and IICA for the purpose of summing up the performance of the agriculture sector in Latin America an the Caribbean in the 1990-2000 period. It also takes into account the principal challenge that will have to be faced in the future. In this regard, it is a continuation of a similar endeavour made by the two organizations several years ago, refering to the 1970-1995 period.

In this study, an induvidualized approach was taken, meaning that each country's situation and the various agricultural policies applied throughout the region were taken into account. Similarly, an effort was made to identify problems and solutions that were common to all countries during the period of reference.

The analysis was focused on agricultural production and trade in the region. for this purpose, backgraund information and statistical data were obtained from tha main international institutions involved in this field. Like the previous study, this one provides a graphic presentation accompanied by brief comments to make easier to become familiar with the region's agricultural situation.
