The Caribbean faces a number of social development challenges brought about by the intensification of poverty, escalating food prices and concomitant problems such as rising health problems, crime, violence and social dislocation. In addition, the escalating HIV/AIDS pandemic is a prominent health challenge in the Caribbean and is compounded by poverty and its many repercussions. ECLAC Subregional Headquarters for the Caribbean assists Governments and institutions in promoting Caribbean social development and the achievement of internationally agreed development goals (IADGs). This work focuses on the implementation of plans and programmes of action arising out of international conferences such as the World Summit for Social Development (WSSD); the International Conference for Population and Development (ICPD); and the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing Conference). Our Office works in three focus areas. -
Sustainable Social Development: Supporting the formulation and programming of evidenced-based social policy. This work focuses on: the analysis of social policy and demographic dynamics in the Caribbean; poverty reduction; reducing the social impact of natural disasters; and providing appropriate development indicators.
