En la resolución 602 (XXX), aprobada en el trigésimo período de sesiones de la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 2004), se acordó enmarcar en las actividades de la Comisión un Foro sobre la aplicación regional de las decisiones adoptadas en la Cumbre Mundial sobre el Desarrollo Sostenible y solicitar a su Secretario Ejecutivo que lo convoque teniendo en consideración el ciclo de aplicación bienal de la Comisión sobre el Desarrollo Sostenible de las Naciones Unidas. En cumplimiento de dicho mandato, se realizará el próximo Foro, que tendrá lugar en la sede de la CEPAL, en Santiago de Chile, los días 28 y 29 de noviembre de 2007.

Para el período de sesiones de examen de este ciclo bienal, se han seleccionado los siguientes temas: agricultura, desarrollo rural, tierra, sequía y desertificación. Los países que representan a la región de América Latina y el Caribe son los siguientes: Antigua y Barbuda, Belice, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Haití, México y Perú. Sin embargo, todos los países de la región CEPAL están siendo convocados a la misma.

La realización de este Foro ofrecerá a los gobiernos y otros actores interesados en el desarrollo sostenible de la región, incluidos organismos del sistema de las Naciones Unidas y grupos principales, la oportunidad de intercambiar experiencias y lecciones aprendidas en la aplicación del Programa 21 y de los acuerdos de la Cumbre Mundial sobre el Desarrollo Sostenible de Johannesburgo 2002, así como de analizar los desafíos pendientes en las áreas consideradas. Confiamos en que, asimismo, contribuirá a la aplicación de una perspectiva latinoamericana y caribeña a la evaluación global del cumplimiento de los acuerdos pertinentes.

La participación de los grupos principales y miembros de alianzas estratégicas es bienvenida en el Foro de Aplicación Regional. Se aplicarán para su acreditación las normas usuales de la CDS. Se invita a que los interesados contacten al secretariado de la reunión, según se indica abajo.

La CEPAL está preparando un informe regional sobre los temas mencionados, el que estará disponible en la reunión. Durante los debates, las delegaciones podrán formular comentarios, que serán debidamente considerados para su inclusión en el informe final. El documento se publicará en español e inglés.

El temario provisional anotado, así como una propuesta de organización de los trabajos y el informe titulado "Agricultura, desarrollo rural, tierra, sequía y desertificación: resultados, tendencias y desafíos para el desarrollo sostenible de América Latina y el Caribe", podrán consultarse en esta página web próximamente.

In the resolution 602 (XXX) of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean adopted at its thirtieth session (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 2004), wherein the decision was taken to proceed with the inclusion of a regional forum for the implementation of the decisions adopted at the World Summit on Sustainable Development within the framework of the activities of the Economic Commission and to request the Executive Secretary to convene such a forum, taking into consideration the two-year action-oriented implementation cycles of the Commission on Sustainable Development. In fulfilment of that mandate, the Regional Implementation Forum on Sustainable Development, will be held at ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile, on 28 and 29 November 2007.

At the Review Session for this implementation cycle, the Commission on Sustainable Development will focus, inter alia, on the following thematic issues: agriculture, rural development, land, drought and desertification. The countries representing the Latin American and Caribbean region at the Review Session will be: Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico and Peru. Eventhough all the countries that are members of ECLAC are invited.

This Forum will offer Governments and other stakeholders in the region, including agencies, funds and programmes of the United Nations system, the opportunity to share experiences and lessons learned in the implementation of Agenda 21 and the agreements reached at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, as well as to analyse challenges that have yet to be overcome. We are confident that its outcome will also contribute a Latin American and Caribbean perspective to the subsequent global evaluation of progress in implementing the relevant agreements.

The participation of the major groups and partners of partnerships is welcomed to the Forum of Regional Application. The usual norms of the CDS will be applied for their accreditation. All the interested are invited to contact the Secretariat of the meeting, as indicated below.

ECLAC is preparing a regional report on the above-mentioned topics which will be available during the meeting. Comments made by delegations during the discussions to be held at that time will be considerated to be included into the final report, which will be published in Spanish and English.

The annotated provisional agenda, as well as a proposed format for organizing the work of the Forum and the report, to be entitled "Agriculture, rural development, land, drought and desertification: outcomes, trends and challenges for the sustainable development of Latin America and the Caribbean", will be available in this web site soon.
