 | | Estadística de agua e indicadores para reforma políticas | | | | Resumen / Abstract / Résumé: | | The project aims to contribute to addressing two interrelated problems: the first problem relates to the environmental and developmental issues surrounding the management of water resources. Several Latin American countries are already faced with water scarcity, high levels of pollution and a growing number of extreme climatic events such as floods. At the same time it is projected that climate change will worsen the situation in several countries and subregions. To address these problems governments require good quality and timely information about the availability and use of water resources. This brings us to the second problem: in the region environmental information remains scarce, disperse, discontinuous and of poor quality. This is particularly true for information on water resources. Systematically compiled official statistics on water resources are not available in most countries with the exception of Mexico, which has an annual publication on water statistics. Without robust national environmental information systems it will be very difficult for governments to develop and monitor policies for sustainable water management. Building water statistics systems is a necessary and long term process to which this project will contribute to by using the SEEAW and IRWS to systematize and organize existing information and identify information gaps. It is important to recognize that continued technical and financial support is required for the development of robust environmental information systems that can be used for evidence-based policy making in the medium and long term. | | Objetivos / Objectives / Objectifs: | - To support the systematic generation of environmental information that could eventually help participating countries better manage their water resources
| | Resultados / Results / Résultats: | - Strengthened skills of national officials to compile water statistics and accounts using the United Nations System of Integrated Economic-Environmental Accounts for Water Resources and International Recommendations for Water Statistics
- Increased production and dissemination of water statistics and accounts to support policy making and sustainable water management.
- Established regional community of practice sharing experiences, best practices and methods in the compilation of water accounts
