LATIN AMERICA: ECONOMICALLY ACTIVE POPULATION

1980 - 2025

EXPLANATORY NOTES

  1. The information for other Caribbean countries and territories given in tables 1a and 1b come from estimates and projections prepared by the Population Division of the United Nations.
  2. The population figures for calendar years 1995 through to 2005 presented in table 1b were obtained by interpolation, using Karup-King multipliers.
  3. The projected populations shown in tables 1a and 1b are based on a "medium" or "recommended" fertility projection.
  4. NOTES AND SOURCES FOR ESTIMATES AND PROJECTIONS OF THE TOTAL, URBAN, RURAL AND ECONOMICALLY ACTIVE POPULATION.

The estimates and projections of total population by sex and age group for each of the 20 Latin American countries for the period 1970-2050 have, in most cases, been prepared in conjunction with national institutions.

The urban, rural and economically active population projections, on the other hand, have in nearly all cases been prepared by CELADE, because most of the countries have not yet made their own projections based on the most recent census data.

A detailed list of the information sources and a description of the methodology used for each country is given below:

ARGENTINA

I. Estimates and projections of the total population.

Population estimates and projections correspond to those published in "Estimaciones y proyecciones de población: Total del país, 1950-2050 (versión revisada)" (LC/DEM/R.247), OI series, No. 108, Buenos Aires, National Institute of Statistics and Censuses/Latin American Demographic Centre (INDEC/CELADE), 1995. Most recent sources of information: the 1991 national population and housing census and vital statistics up to 1994.

II. Estimates and projections of the urban and rural population.

a. Male activity rates by age group.

Period 1980-1995. Activity rates from the 1996 census were used for 1995. Linear interpolation between the 1975, 1985 census and 1995 rates obtained rates for 1980 and 1990.

Period 2000-2025. These figures were obtained by linear interpolation between the 1995 rates and those of model 1. The 1995 rates were held constant for 25-55 age group. In this case, the model rates were assigned in the year 2030.

b. Female activity rates by age group.

Period 1980-1995. Activity rates from the 1996 census were used for 1995. Linear interpolation between the 1975, 1985 census and 1995 rates obtained rates for 1980 and 1990.

Period 2000-2025. These figures were obtained by linear interpolation between the 1995 rates and those of model 2. In this case, the model rates were assigned in the year 2060.

III.3. Estimates and projections of the economically active population.

The estimated projected activity rates by sex, age group and residence were applied to the corresponding population groups to obtain the economically active population in each group. The male, female and total economically population figures were obtained by addition.

VENEZUELA

I. Estimates and projections of the total population.

Population estimates and projections were prepared by the Central Office of Statistics and Information Sciences (OCEI) in collaboration with CELADE in November 1993. Most recent sources of information: the 1990 national population census and vital statistics up to 1994.

II. Estimates and projections of the urban and rural population.

Estimates and projections were prepared by CELADE and published in Demographic Bulletin No. 63 of January 1999.

III. Estimates and projections of the economically active population.

III.1 Information sources used.

- 1971, 1981, and 1991 national population census;

- 1987 household survey (second semester)

Notes: Data from the 1981 and 1991 censuses were not used for the urban and rural male population due to inconsistencies with the other sources.

The 1997 survey was used to correct the male urban and rural activity rates of the 1991 census.

III.2. Methodology for estimating and projecting activity rates by urban and rural residence.

III.2.1 Estimates and projections of activity rates in urban areas.

a. Male activity rates by age group.

Period 1980-1990. Activity rates from the 1971 and 1991 census were used for 1970 and 1990, adjusted in line with observed figures in the 1987 household survey. Rates for 1980 and 1985 were obtained by linear interpolation between the 1970 and 1990.

Period 1995-2025. These figures were obtained by linear interpolation between the 1990 rates and those of model 1. In this case, the model rates were assigned in the year 2030.

b. Female activity rates by age group.

Period 1980-1990. Activity rates from the 1971 and 1991 census were used for 1980 and 1990. Rates for 1985 were obtained by linear interpolation between the 1980 and 1990.

Period 1995-2025. These figures were obtained by linear interpolation between the 1990 rates and those of model 1. In this case, the model rates were assigned in the year 2030.

III.2.2. Estimate and projection of activity rates in rural areas

a. Male activity rates by age group.
